Hello, so, I finally managed to complete this tutorial. I had hoped to have it all done before the move but that just didn’t happen. But, better late than never right?
I did promise some of my Instagram followers that I would post this in German too, so I’ve added the German translation in italics under each paragraph.

What you need: Du brauchst folgendes:
Yarn in rainbow colours, i.e. red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and purple, or what ever is the closest fit. I used Elle’s Premier Cotton, a local yarn. Garn in Regenbogenfarben: Rot, Orange, Gelb, Grün, Blau, Violet und Lila, oder was farblich am besten passt. Ich habe Elle’s Premier Cotton, ein südafrikanisches Garn gebraucht.
Scissors Schehre
A 5mm crochet hook, you might want to use a smaller hook. It really depends on the yarn you use. I usually use a 4mm hook for DK yarn but found that it pulled too much on the decrease. Eine 5mm Häkelnadel, eine kleinere Häkelnadel kann auch gebraucht werden. Es kommt eigentlich auf das Garn drauf an. Gewöhnich gebrauche ich für ‘double knit’ Garn eine 4mm Häkelnadel, aber für dieses Garn fand ich eine 4mm zu klein.
Six movable stitch markers
Sechs bewegbare Maschenplatzhalter
Small white beans for filling, you could use any stuffing you like but I wanted a hacky sack type of feel to the ball. Kleine Weisse Bohnen, oder ein ein anderes Füllmaterial. Ich wollte eine art Hackysack machen, deshalb die Bohnen.
A tapestry needle for sewing in the ends. Eine dicke Nadel um die Enden einzunähen.
Once you have closed the ring place 2 SC into the first stitch you made and secure the loop with one of the stitch markers. Wenn du den ‘magic ring’ geschlossen hast häkel 2 feste Mashen in die nächste Masche. Befestige einen der bewegbaren Maschenplatzhältern an der Schlaufe.
Make a slipknot. Fertige eine Schlaufe an. Place it onto your hook. Zieh die Schlaufe auf die Häkelnadel.
Insert the hook into the next available stitch and continue as normal for making a single crochet. Place one more SC into the same stitch. Stecke die Häkelnadel in die nächste Masche und fertige jetzt eine feste Masche an. Setze noch eine feste Masche in die selbe Masche. Insert a movable stitch marker into the loop. Befestige einen der beweglichen Maschenplatzhältern an der Schlaufe.
Continue in the same manner until you have used all remaining colours. (2 stitches per colour) Die letzten Schritte mit den anderen Farben wiederhohlen. (2 Maschen pro Farbe)
Once you’ve completed the first ’round’ you will notice that the yarn is starting to look a bit like a pile of spaghetti. If you just keep going on and on like this you’ll end up with a huge knotted mess of yarn by the end of the ball. Nach der ersten Runde fängt das Garn etwas nach Spaghetti aus zu sehen. Wenn Du das so weiter machst entsteht daraus ein riesiges verknotetes Käul.
I found a very simple solution for this mess though. Ich habe dafür eine einfache Lösung.
Firstly, make sure that your yarn is lined up, as shown in the photo. Keep it neat this way and it’ll make the rest easy. For this tutorial I actually had the yarn lying on a tray, that way it couldn’t roll around too much. Erstens, das Garn muss schön ordentlich aufgereiht sein, so wie im Foto. Wenn das Garn schön ordentlich ist, ist der Rest leicht. Für dieses Tutorial hatte ich das Garn auf einem Tablett liegen, dadurch konnte es nicht all zu sehr rum rollen.
When you hold the piece of crochet you’ll notice that the pink yarn is lying on top and the red is at the bottom. In order to stop the yarn from being twisted you need to get the red yarn to lie back on top. Wenn du das Gehäkelte vor dir hast kannst Du sehen das das Rosa Garn oben liegt und das Rote unten. Um ein Garndurcheinander zu vermeiden muss das Rote Garn wieder oben liegen.
Simply turn the crochet clockwise (for left handed hookers) and counter clockwise (for right handed hookers) until the red yarn is lying back on top. Drehe ganz einfach die Häkelarbeit im Uhrzeigersin (für Linkshänder) und gegen den Uhrzeigersin (für Rechtshänder) bis das Rote Garn wieder oben liegt.
Do this after every round in order to avoid a big muddle of yarn but don’t worry of you forget after one round, just repeat the turning until the red yarn is back on top and everything looks neat like in the photo below.
Wiederhohl diese Wendung nach jeder Runde um das Garndurcheinander zu vermeiden. Es macht aber nichts wenn Du es mal vergisst, einfach so lange drehen bis das Rote Garn wieder oben ist. Das Foto unten zeigt wie es aussehen sollte.
A simple rule to follow is to leave the stitch with the stitch marker unworked. This applies to all colours except for the last, which you will have to count. Eine einfache Regel ist immer bis vor die Masche mit dem bewegbarem Maschenplatzhalter zu häkeln. Das gilt für all Farben bis auf die letzte, da musst Du einfach zählen.
So, the next step is to add 1SC per colour. (You will notice that you have 2 workable stitches in each colour.) Also, der nächste Schritt ist dann 1 feste Masche pro Farbe hinzu zu fügen. (Du solltest jetzt 2 Maschen haben, in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Increase the next stitch by placing 2SC into the same stitch. (3 workable stitches per colour, due to increase) Nimm eine Masche zu indem Du zwei feste Maschen in die nächste Masche häkelst. (3 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Next add 2 SC per colour. (3 workable stitches per colour) Als nächstes füge pro Farbe zwei fest Maschen hinzu. (3 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Increase the next stitch by placing 2SC into the same stitch. (4 workable stitches per colour) Nimm nun wieder eine Masche pro Farbe zu indem Du zwei feste Maschen in die nächste Masche häkelst. (4 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 3SC to each colour. ( 4 workable stitches per colour) Häkel 3 weitere feste Maschen pro Farbe. (4 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Increase the next stitch by placing 2SC into the same stitch. (5 workable stitches per colour) Eine Masche pro Farbe zunehmen indem Du 2 feste Maschen in die nächste Masche häkelst. (5 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 4SC to each colour. ( 5 workable stitches per colour) 4 weitere feste Maschen pro Farbe häkeln. (5 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Place an increase into the next stitch of each colour. (6 workable stitches per colour) Nimm eine Masche pro Farbe zu indem Du 2 feste Maschen in die nächste Masche häkelst. (6 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 5SC to each colour. ( 6 workable stitches per colour) 5 weitere Maschen pro Farbe häkeln. (6 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Place an increase into the next stitch. ( 7 workable stitches per colour) In der nächsten Masche zunehmen. (7 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 6SC to each colour. ( 7 workable stitches per colour) 6 feste Maschen pro Farbe häkeln. (7 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Place an increase into the next stitch. (8 workable stitches per colour) In der nächsten Masche zunehmen. (8 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
By now you should have 35 stitches per colour with six increases per colour. Du solltest jetzt 35 Masche pro Farbe haben, und sechs mal Maschen zugenommen haben.
Now you need to shape the side of the ball. Simply crochet five sets of 7SC per colour. This will give you a further 35 stitches per colour, or 70 stitches per colour in total. Nun muss die Mitte des Balls geformt werden. Ganz einfach 5 Sets von 7 festen Maschen häkeln. Dadurch wird jede Farbe um noch 35 Maschen erweitert. Insgesamt solltest du nun 70 Maschen haben.

Now you need to start on the decreases. To do this add 6SCs per colour. Except for the last colour, you will always leave the two stitches before the stitch marker unworked. Jetzt musst Du anfangen Maschen abzunehmen. Fang an indem Du 6 feste Maschen pro Farbe häkelst. Beim abnehmen werden immer die letzten zwei Maschen frei gelassen.
The next stitch will be a decrease. Bei der nächsten Masche wird abgenommen.
I have used a modified invisible decrease for this ball, since I’m crocheting looser than normally used for amigurumi and I found that the original invisible decrease was a bit holey 😉 Für den Ball habe ich den ‘invisible decrease’ etwas abgeändert da ich ihn mit einer dickeren Häkelnadel häkel und der normale ‘invisible decrease’ etwas zu löcherig dafür ist.
To make a decrease do the following: Insert your hook only into the front loop of the next stitch. Do not draw up a loop. Um die Masche abzunehmen machst Du folgendes: Steche die Häkelnadel durch die vordere Schlaufe der nächsten Masche und ziehe das Garn NICHT durch die Schlaufe.
Now insert your hook through the next stitch. You will have four loops on your hook, one in the working colour (red in the photo) and three in the underlying colour (orange in the photo). Nun steche die Häkelnadel durch die ganze nächste Masche. Jetzt hast Du vier Schlaufen auf der Häkelnadel. Die erste in der Farbe (auf dem Foto Rot) mit der Du momentan arbeitest und drei in der unteren Farbe (auf dem Bild Orange).
Pull the working colour (red in the photo) through all three loops of the underlying colour (orange in the photo). Now you have two loops of the same colour on your hook, which you can complete as normal for a single crochet stitch. Zieh nun das Garn (Rot auf dem Bild) mit dem Du gerade arbeitest durch die drei Schlaufen der unteren Farbe (Orange auf dem Bild). Jetzt hast Du zwei Schlaufen in der gleichen Farbe auf der Häkelnadel, die kannst Du jetzt als feste Masche fertig häkeln.
You will now have 7 working stitches left per colour. Jetzt hast Du nur noch 7 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können.
Next add 5SC per colour. Als nächstes häkel 5 Maschen pro Farbe.
Next place one decrease per colour. (6 working stitches per colour) Nun wieder eine Masche pro Farbe abnehmen. (6 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 4SC per colour. 4 weitere feste Maschen pro Farbe häkeln.
Again decrease by one stitch per colour. (5 working stitches per colour) Wieder eine Masche pro Farbe abnehmen. (5 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 3SC per colour. 3 feste Maschen pro Farbe häkeln.
Decrease the next stitch of each colour. (4 working stitches per colour) Die nächste Masche bei jeder Farbe abnehmen. (4 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Add 2SC per colour. 2 feste Maschen pro Farbe häkeln.
Decrease one stitch per colour (2 working stitches per colour). Eine Masche pro Farbe abnehmen. (2 Maschen in die noch gehäkelt werden können)
Now you need to cut all the yarn except the red one, leaving enough yarn to sew in the ends. Leave the stitch marker in the red loop. Pull all the yarn ends through the stitch, so there are no loops left hanging. Turn the ball inside out, this may be a bit tricky because the opening is quite small. Schneide nun alle Garnenden ausser Rot mit genügend Länge zum vernähen ab. Lasse den Maschenplatzhalter in der roten Masche. Ziehe nun die Garnenden durch die Masche, so dass keine Schlaufen übrig sind. Drehe den Ball auf links. Das kann etwas schwer sein, weil die Öffnung sehr klein ist.
I’m a bit lazy when it comes to sewing all these yarn ends in, so I cheated a bit. For the yarn ends at the beginning of the ball I only wove in the red yarn, making sure that it was really tight. The other six colours I simply knotted together really well -two at a time- and then cut the ends. You can weave them in if you like. Beim einnähen der Enden bin ich hier etwas faul. Ich nähe nur das rote Ende am Ballanfang richtig gut fest, so dass der Ball nicht auf geht. Die weiteren sechs Farben knote ich einfach gut fest -immer zwei zusammen- und schneide dann das restliche Garn ab. Du kannst sie auch einnähen, wenn du möchtest.
The photo below shows what it looks like from the inside. Das untere Foto zeigt wie das aussieht.
Leave the ball inside out for now and weave in the top ends. To secure the last stitch of each colour insert the needle as follows:
Notice that there are two horizontal(ish) loops and one vertical loop that make up the stitch. Insert your needle through the vertical loop towards the other stitches of that colour. Look at the photo for clarity. Don’t pull the yarn too tight to begin with, or you will loose one of the stitches per colour. Weave the ends in carefully and properly. This is the weakest point of the ball and you need to make sure the ends don’t unravel.
Lass den Ball noch auf links und nähe die oberen Garnenden ein. Steche die Nadel in folgender Weise ein:
Wenn Du genau schaust wirst Du merken, dass die Masche aus zwei horizontalen Schlaufen und einer vertikalen Schlaufe besteht. Steche die Nadel in die vertikale Schlaufe in Richtung der anderen Maschen der selben Farbe ein. Nicht zu fest an dem Garn ziehen ,sonst verlierst Du eine Masche. Vorsichtig die Garnenden einnähen, dies ist das schwächste Ende des Balls.
Once you’ve sewn in all the ends turn the ball right-side out again. Wenn alle Enden gut eingenäht sind kannst Du den Ball wieder auf rechts drehen.
Complete one more round of decreases, 7 decreases in all. Cut the yarn and pull the yarn end free. Mit dem roten Garn nun immer zwei Maschen zusammen häkeln, so dass am Ende nur noch 7 Maschen übrig sind. Das Garn abschneiden und die Schlaufe aus der Masche ziehen.
You may have noticed that the ball is not really ball shaped yet but once you have stuffed it it will automatically form a ball. You may have to roll it around in your hands a bit once you’ve sewn it up properly. Im Moment sieht der Ball ja nicht gerade Ballförmig, aber nachdem er mit den Bohnen gefüllt ist formt er sich von selbst. Es kann sein, dass Du ihn etwas in Deinen Händen rollen musst um ihn 100% rund zu bekommen.
Stuff the ball with the small white beans now, a funnel might be helpful here. You can fill it quite well but the beans should still be able to move around a bit when handling the ball. Fülle den Ball nun mit den Bohnen, ein Trichter kann das leichter machen. Du kannst den Ball ziemlich voll stopfen, aber die Bohnen sollten sich noch etwas bewegen können .
Once stuffed close the ball in the following manner: Insert your needle through the front loop of each of the seven stitches and pull the yarn tight. Wenn der Ball vollgestopft ist schliesse das Loch in folgender Weise: Steche die Nadel nur durch die vordere Schlaufe der sieben Maschen und ziehe das Garn gut fest.
Once tightly closed, sew in the yarn end making sure that the red yarn cannot be seen. I tend to go back along the red spiral for a bit. Then I insert the needle into the ball and bring it out lower down through the red spiral and then weave in the other direction. I do that a few times, until my paranoia is appeased 😉 haha Vernähe nun vorsichtig das Garnende so dass es nicht sichtbar ist. Ich nähe eine Weile an der Roten Spirale zurück und wechsele öfters die Richtung, so dass der Ball nicht wieder auf geht. Das mache ich mehrmals, bis meine Paranoia etwas gelindert ist 😉 haha
And there you have it! A perfect little rainbow spiral ball 🙂 Und da ist er nun: Der perfekte kleine regenbogen- spieralen Ball 🙂

You could even make these in Christmas colours and stuff them with stuffing material and use them as ornaments. Den kann man auch gut in weihnachtlichen Farben anfertigen und mit anderem Füllmaterial stopfen und dann als Deko gebrauchen.
